"If grief and pain are sometimes necessary for the growth of the person, then we must learn not to protect the person from them automatically as if they were always bad. Sometimes they may be good and desirable in view of the ultimate good consequences"
- Abraham Maslow
Therapeutic Approach
I view psychotherapy as a joining of experts. I as the therapist have expertise from my training and clinical experiences. You as the client have expertise on your life and personal experiences, knowing what works and does not work for you, knowing what you want to explore in life. At the core, therapy is a process that can benefit almost anyone as it is a journey in personal growth and development.
"It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried." - Carl Rogers
In my evolution as a psychotherapist I have experience using various models including Humanistic/Client Centered Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Trauma Resiliency Model, Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness, Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and Existential Therapy. At this stage in my career I find it much more difficult to say in words what I do as my model. It is a creative process where together we explore what topics seem distressing or interesting and have the most energy. I view it as an artful, experiential, in the moment process. In other words, I will quote the common therapist's saying of "trust the process."
